GCSE Equivalents
The Consortium accepts overseas qualifications which are recognised by UK NARIC as GCSE equivalent or above. We will also accept any UK qualification appearing on the TDA’s list of GCSE and equivalent qualifications for entry to initial teacher training courses.
Please note that the Consortium is unable to accept Certificates in Adult Literacy or Numeracy at level two, due to a directive from the TDA.
For those who speak English as an additional language, the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is available at a number of institutions around London. The Consortium accepts a score of 6.5 or above, in each of the four tests as equivalent to GCSE. Visit the IELTS website for further details.
GCSE Equivalency Tests
Where potential candidates do not have the required GCSE equivalents, or they are unable to find or obtain originals of their qualifications, the Consortium will offer equivalency tests as detailed below.
Maths, English and Science GCSE Equivalency tests are available periodically (usually once each term). For further information and to book your place on a test please visit the A Star Teachers website.
Tests will be in the style of GCSE papers and will examine the scope of each GCSE syllabus.
- Maths will test Arithmetic, Algebra and Geometry
- English will test Speaking, Listening, Reading and Writing
- Science will test Biology, Physics, Chemistry
Successful candidates will receive a certificate and will be able to progress their application.
Candidates can prepare for the tests by using GCSE revision guides, available from bookshops and public libraries.
Please note that GCSE English and mathematics (and GCSE science for primary applicants) or their equivalent are a requirement for entry to any teacher training programme. You must supply evidence of successful completion of the GCSE or equivalent qualifications when you submit your application, if your application is to be considered for a place on the programme. GCSE Equivalency Tests from other organisations are not accepted*.
* Under a reciprocal agreement we are also able to accept GCSE equivalent tests from the West London Partnership.
